Nostalgicesque: Vintage NYC Subculture

BANDE À PART is a documentary record of the brilliant, anarchic spirit of downtown New York in the late 60s through the early 80s, photographed not by some journalist covering the ‘counterculture’, but by the participants themselves. These photographers lived the scene, and they have compiled their incredible shots of Blondie, Suicide, the Velvet Underground, the Ramones, the New York Dolls, the Talking Heads, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie, on stage, backstage and just messing around. BANDE À PART is Basquiat and Mapplethorpe, glam rock and No Wave, CBGBs, Max’s Kansas City and the Factory--an extraordinary record of a long-gone time and a place in New York City history.

in a perfect world....

i'd have my own rent controlled apartment in prospect heights with
  • all utilities included
  • it'd be pest and vermin free
  • have all its original moldings
  • a friendly bodega on the corner plus a gentrified cafe next door
and i'd let this dude creative direct it for me.
(yes, a creative director. life is one big photo shoot. cast it accordingly)

a curation of art, design and interior splendor, the MylesHenryBlog has me saving my coins in hopes of moving outta my Momma's basement one day.

if you have your own crib or would like to have your own crib, or know someone with their own crib, read this blog DAILY.

Highbrow Fuckery at Its Best

This is the high class bullshit that i live for.
This Tuesday at the Louvre in Paris an Angry Russian Woman pulled a teacup from her purse and threw it at the Mona Lisa.

*PLEASE LET THAT SHIT SINK IN*

Now while I was not at all impressed with the Mona Lisa, at no point did I feel compelled to hurl a piece of tableware at it. But then again I guess art moves people in different ways. Whatever.

The Itsy Bitsy Mona Lisa; encased in glass behind a wooden barrier in its own separate wall.

What I admire most about this dashing display of raw emotion is that the "Angry Russian Woman" was prepared for the task ahead of her. She was not satisfied with the cheapness of a paper cup, nor was she barbaric enough to send a small rock upside Mona Lisa's head. She so thoughtfully chose a teacup: an ancient symbol of refinement, class, and sophistication. So take that you no eyebrow-havin heffa... Needless to say the "Angry Russian Woman" was clearly deranged and was promptly carted off to a loony bin for testing.

The crowds keep at bay behind velvet ropes

Clearly her actions could be deemed as art as well....I mean it inspired MY ass off the couch and got me bloggin again. So thank you "Angry Russian Woman".....and my 16 followers thank you too!

Une Style Moment

Hey Snobbers,
While I sometimes comment and praise the fashion choices of others, and by comment I mean trash, I would never consider Critique de Culture a FASHION blog. There are millions of those out there in the blogosphere and I'd figure I'd leave that to the professionals like this one and this one and oh yes this one.

But I must acknowledge my humble beginnings in the fashion rag world. For the major portion of 2006, I slaved away as a fashion intern at NYLON MAG. Yes, back when the interns really had to work and didn't have TV shows. Anyhoo, I interned under some pretty amazing people, one of them being Aya Kanai.

This was the first shoot that I assisted Aya on:

The Denim Issue Ashley Olsen August 2006 cover.

Here at Critique De Culture We heart Aya.Just chillin in the tub like its a Tuesday

Peep this Style Profile that The Sartorialist did on Miss Kanai.

Read This Fools: Che the 2nd Coming

We've all seen this image plastered on any and everything that they can stick a price tag on. In Peru it sells air fresheners, in Switzerland snowboards and vino (wine for you uncultured few) in Italy. And let's not forget when Jay Z donned a Che T Shirt for his MTV Unplugged, how it sparked a mainstream hip hop fad; had all the hood dudes running to SOHO to cop one.

Michael Casey's book Che's Afterlife tracks down the origins of the photo and its reincarnation into today's iconic logo.

Che's Afterlife

In this bracing and keenly observed book, Mr. Casey traces how Korda’s photograph became one of the most widely disseminated images in the world, how Che went from being a symbol of resistance to the capitalist system to one of the most marketable and marketed brands around the globe, how the guerrilla fighter became a logo as recognizable as the Nike swoosh or McDonald’s golden arches.
-Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

Korda holding the 3 Cuban Peso.

Crazy lil Fact: the photographer Alberto Diaz Gutierrez, also known as Korda, originally took the photo at a funeral in 1960. In some early predecessor of PhotoShop, Korda crops the pic, erases the trees nearby and removes another man in the background. Only in 1997 was Korda able to collect the royalties of his work. Korda dies in 2001!! He only got 4 years of profits on his work from 40 years earlier. Damn Son....Charge it to tha game!!

l'homage: Sade

I'm Crying Everyone's tears.
I have already paid for all my future sins
Theres nothing anyone can say to take this away

If you were mine, If you were mine,
I wouldn't want to go to heaven
Cherish the day

I won't pretend that I intend to stop living
I won't pretend that I'm good at forgiving
But I can't hate you, although I have tried
I still really really love you, love is stronger than pride

There must have been an angel by my side
Something heavenly led me to you
Look at the sky, its the colour of love

I gotta crush on you, I love me some you!!

Yes Snobbers, ya girl is in love!!

I just saw his latest film Elegy, in which he plays British Professor who has an affair with his student, Penelope Cruz, and this crush official.

Ben Kingsley is my 65 year old DILF. (Dad I'd Like to ......well you know)
I was feeling him in The Wackness but I wanted to make sure it wasn't puppy love or the 2 Coconut Margaritas that had before the movie.... But after Elegy, I'm certain he is the ONE!

There is something about older men that just get me going.... their self assuredness(NOTE: not a real word), the fact that they've had numerous lovers ensuring that they know how to romance a woman, or maybe its the fact that his Social Security and Pension are about to kick in... I dunno.
But either way, I'm into him DEEP!

DON'T JUDGE ME!!!

Flashing Lights 2.0

While I have very mixed feelings about Kanye West... My sentiments about his new video are sure....

I appreciate the whole "everyday day life as a photoshoot motif", it says so much about pop culture and most importantly the mentality of many females today. The storyline is unfortunate yet so true to life. Living in NYC, for a while that seemed to be the main topic of news of for so long. The City Business bureau even clamped down on the issuing of liquor licenses to new venues in response to young women going missing after a night of wild partying.

there is so much i can say on this topic, but check out the video and tell me what you think.

There is a God....

For those of you (ie: me) who missed Ailey's annual Holiday series at City Center,

Here is your second chance....
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is having 8 performances at BAM from June 3rd to the 8th.
Some tix are still available, but the good ones are going fast!
On the program there is the The Golden Section, Masekela Language, Pas de Duke and omnipresent Revelations.

Thank the Heavens, cuz i didn't think i could wait till November for my Ailey fix (particularly Revelations).

In the famous words of Miss Sophia, "I knew dey was a God!"
