Its a LOVELY DAY!

Rejoice!

Lovely Day has reopened.
After being closed for an entire year due to a fire in the building, its back in business slingin' awesome Thai to the masses.
I'm so happy about life right now.....if only we could get my beloved Teany to reopen.
Be still my beating heart. One miracle at a time.

She's Just Soni from tha Block

So I rolled outta bed this morning just in time to hear President Obama, *hey boo*, announce his pick for the Supreme Court, Federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

Don't be fooled by the rocks that she's got, Senora Sonia hails from Da Boogie Down Bronx. Lil Sonia grew up in the Bronxdale Housing Projects and went on to earn degrees from Princeton University and Yale Law School.

If Judge Sotomayor is confirmed, she will be the first Female Hispanic to serve on the Supreme Court. AZUCAR!!

ONCE RIPE, NOW LUMINOUS

Bopping about town, south of 14st that is, one can come across many people. Given. And of those people, this is an enclave of talented, driven and creative individuals. Given. And of this enclave, there is an even smaller niche of creatives that are truly working and hustling to bring their visions to life. Given. And of this niche there is a handful that will see the promise of their talent and hard work come to fruition. Not so given. And of this handful, I have met Folasade Ologundudu.

RIPE, Ologundudu’s first foray into jewelry, celebrated the voluptuous forms and the feminine mystic. Inspired by the sophistication of her male counterparts and noticing the absence of jewelry that suited their avant garde style, she created LUMINARY to fill the void.

The Guillotine Bracelet and The Blind Ring

With this new line entitled The Space Blockade; Ologundudu shifts her focus from the supple sinuous silhouette of RIPE to the asymmetry and angular form of LUMINARY. Architecture, geometry and negative spaces served as components for the visual synthesis of these jewels. A lesson in contrasts to say the least, Ologundudu shows that she is no one trick pony when it comes to her art.

The Modern Architect Earring

The Guillotine Cutter

Defining a LUMINARY as “one who inspires others , leading light” Miss Ologundudu invites us to share “our experiences and ideas, our passions and dreams, in the most intimate of ways; in the way you dress, style yourself, and see the world around you.”

See the light and get into The Space Blockade at Luminary Collective.com

PS: She did the Art direction for the amazing-ass look book too!

A Must....

I know it came out like 3 weeks ago....

But I totally loved The Wackness!!
The film was super funny and the soundtrack if effing amazing!!
All joints from 94-95 that totally took me back to my elementary school days in BK
(Biggie, Craig Mack, Total, Wu Tang, Nas and mixtapes when they were actual homemade mixes on real tapes!! Not this digital nonsense we have now. Do you remember making mix tapes off of the radio?!?! ......AAHH the good old Dayz!)
Nostalgia always Culture Approved!

PS: Look our for a cameo by Method Man sporting the worst Jamaican Accent ever in movie history.

Flashing Lights 2.0

While I have very mixed feelings about Kanye West... My sentiments about his new video are sure....

I appreciate the whole "everyday day life as a photoshoot motif", it says so much about pop culture and most importantly the mentality of many females today. The storyline is unfortunate yet so true to life. Living in NYC, for a while that seemed to be the main topic of news of for so long. The City Business bureau even clamped down on the issuing of liquor licenses to new venues in response to young women going missing after a night of wild partying.

there is so much i can say on this topic, but check out the video and tell me what you think.

Haring reBorn

Strolling down the Bowery tonight, on the way to Whole Foods of course, I stumbled across this artsy throwback
This is an original mural by Keith Haring still in the damn wall !!!
How amazing is that?!?! One could only pray to have that kind of artistic impact on the world.

If you don't know about Mr. Haring, READ SOMETHING DAMMITT!
If you're practicing unprotected sex GET SOME CONDOMS
And you can thank the Deitch Project for this throwback.

Culture Approved Goings Ons!

Here are some Culture Snobette Approved Happenings in NYC to check out:

ART BITCH
Jeff Koons on the Roof @ MOMA

Costume Institute @ The MET Present Superheros: Fashion and Fantasy
From May 7 to September 1
...you get the idea.

HELLO BROOKLYN

So Since Gentrification has got everyone jocking Brooklyn's tip, enjoy some of the perks:

The Brooklyn Flea
Held in the yard of Bishop Laughlin, the flea market is rapidly becoming the "IT Post Brunch Spot".

Then hit up the Brooklyn Indie Market in Carrol Gardens

Then head over to the Promenade and your life's worth...

Pending you don't jump over the railing.. Head to the IFC Theater on 6th and West 4th, to see a flick about a Micheal Jackson and Marilyn Monroe falling in love at an Artist Commune....

Actually they're impersonators, not as authentic but way more freaky. The movie entitled "Mr. Lonely" is directed by Harmony Korine, the Nut Job that wrote KIDS, back in the early 90's.

(I HATED KIDS)
Either way, it's time to get off the couch, for spring has sprung!!

Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls....

Close, but not exactly what I had in mind.

The Genius City of New York is so supportive of the arts, that it almost makes me misty eyed.
A few years ago we were graced with the Gates of Central Park by Christo and Jean-Claude.

So for the Summer of 2008 NYC will be getting their very own Waterfalls.

From mid July- October the Public Art Fund in conjunction with Olafur Eliasson, will install 4 man made waterfalls along the East River.
Here are the projected images of what the 'Falls will look like.

For more info on the Waterfalls
And Check out Olafur Eliasson at MOMA's PS.1

And while we wait for them to arrive, let this TLC video take you back to the summer of 1995

No Pants in 2K8 Son!!

I saw this today on the New York Magazine website and I had to share...

Improv Everywhere has sent out the invitation to all to join them on their annual (thanks stupid head Jaime) No Pants Extravaganza!!
Improv Everywhere has been organizing this event since 2002 where train riders, under strict guidelines and protocol, take off their pants on the 6 train and ride from Brooklyn Bridge to 125st and back.

This is another reason why i absolutely love my freakin' city, people think up of random shit like this, and in the name of art and culture.... people actually do it!! It's genius!

Check out Improv Everywhere's website to see their previous "missions" and how you can join their artsy shenanigans...
ahh I live for this stuff.
